Using ceramics as a material offers a lot of insight about the subject matter that I want to work with. I am continually confronted with the permanence of this material. Its unpredictable nature is something I value and the challenges that it offers to me is important in order for my work to grow. Clay is always changing; in a way, it’s alive. The material and its constantly shifting stages allow me to layer not only information, but also history.
These meditations on the history and permanence of clay led me to the thoughts and idealistic views of home and family life. Homes are very sacred, special places to people, especially childhood homes. To me, all these things make up a part of the collective history as humans. Without memory or a sense of family and belonging, we would not be the society and culture we are today. It ties us together as a species, and makes our lives worth living.
